People still have problems getting around the fact that water can be “hard.” Hard water is not what you think it is (ice), rather it is water that contains a disproportionate amount of magnesium, calcium, and many other metals.
When hard water evaporates from transparent surfaces (windows), they leave behind residues of these materials causing a chalky white blur. Not only are these stains hard to see through, but they are also tougher to clean, and they cause damage to the window.
Hard water is also the cause of
- Clogged plumbing
- Rusting around areas
- Difficulty in lathering with soap
- Poor tasting water
Here are few ways clean off hard water spots on your windows
Clean with a Vinegar solution
- Fill a container with a mixture of vinegar and water; make the concentration/volume of vinegar higher than that of water; it is more effective this way.
- Soak up a towel with the solution of water and vinegar and press on the affected spot on your windows
- Let the solution rest for some time on the affected region to soften the mineral deposits. It makes wiping the spots off easier.
- Move and press the towel hard on the spot to make it disappear and repeat the process all over.
- Wipe off the moisture in the window with a dry rag and shine the window with a spray.
Cleaning with a toothpaste
As crazy as this may sound, toothpaste solutions can be a DIY method of ridding your house from hard water stains. And they work fairly well
- Make a solution out of the toothpaste material so that it flows freely
- Spread this solution to the glass and allow it to sit there for a while.
- Apply pressure with a towel, sponge, or brush by scrubbing the affected spots lightly
- Wash off the paste from the glass with running water and dry the glass.
Using Abrasive Cleaners
Abrasive cleaners are powdered cleaning agents that are sprinkled on the window surface and rubbed against the spot.
- Moisten the surface of your glass; it helps to form a kind of paste with the abrasive cleaners.
- You can apply vinegar to the water (about a 50/50) mixture, it makes the cleaning solution more potent.
- Sprinkle the powder on the surface of your glass
- Make some tough scrubbing on the affected area of the glass; the powder aids by “scrubbing” off the spots
- Wash and dry away from the paste as they can leave residue on the glass if left for too long

Even with these DIY home tips for removing hard water stains from glass, they are more stubborn to remove than you can imagine. And if these stains stay too long on the glass surface, then you might need to replace the glass.
